Milk bath

Probably the most common way to use up undrinkable breast milk!

Milk baths are super soothing and can help clear up:

Cradle cap
Eczema
Diaper rash
As well as moisturizing dry or irritated skin.


How to make your milk bath:

fill baby’s bath as usual
add enough breast milk to make the water cloudy
let baby soak at least 5 minutes (or longer) and sponge milky water over their whole body
pat dry and seal in the benefits with a gentle moisturizing lotion or amplify the benefits further with breast milk lotion!
Want to add some extra skincare benefits?

Try adding in some oats!! Blend oats into a powder and add into the bath for extra soothing benefits. This is a great trick for eczema!


First aid syringe

Fill 1 cc syringes with breast milk, and freeze in a date-labeled ziploc bag. Keep in mind the longer the milk has been frozen, the less potent the anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial benefits will be.

Pull a syringe out for spot treating the following:

  • ear infections
  • pink eye
  • insect bites
  • minor burns
  • superficial cuts/abrasions
  • diaper rash

…or any other minor irritation!


Ease Diaper rash

A stufy found that breast milk was just as effective as hydrocortisone on babies with diaper rash.  You can just pat some breast milk on your baby’s bottom and then let it dry before you put their diaper back on.

How to make breast milk nappy balm

Ingredients

  • 100ml breast milk
  • 100ml grapeseed or coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp grated beeswax
  • Few drops of vitamin E oil
  • 6-8 drops of lavender essential oil (optional)

Method

STEP 1: Heat the grapeseed or coconut oil with the beeswax in the microwave on low until just melted, about two to three minutes.

STEP 2: Add the vitamin E oil to the mix.

STEP 3: Pour the breast milk into the mixture while whisking. The mixture will get thicker as you whisk.

STEP 4: Let the mixture cool before using. It will keep getting thicker as it cools, so if you want to store it in a jar, pour it in while it’s still warm.

This Breast Milk Nappy Balm can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three months.


Relieve Sore nipples

Sore nipples are quite common in the early days of breastfeeding.  Breast milk provides soothing relief and helps nipples heal faster.  You can express some breast milk directly onto the nipple and let it dry to reap the benefits.


Help Fight Eczema

Up to 50% of all infants develop baby eczema in the first couple months.  Breast milk was found to be an equally effective treatment for eczema compared with hydrocortisone according to a study.


Treat Insect bites + Sunburns

Add some breast milk to water to make a cloudy solution and mist over your bites or sunburns for soothing relief.


Fight Cradle Cap  

Add some breast milk to water to make a cloudy solution and mist over your child’s problem areas on their head.


Fertilize Your Plants

Plants get most of their nutrition from soil.  Milk (both breast milk and cow or goat milk) contains beneficial minerals so if you add some to soil it may help your plants grow better.


MAKE A “MOMSICLE” (BREAST MILK POPSICLE)

You can freeze your breast milk into popsicle molds to turn them into “momsicles” to help your baby’s teething gums feel better.  You can also blend in some pureed fruit for some flavor variety and they also make a fabulous frozen treat for your baby on hot days.

Make Breast Milk Jewelry

Create a piece of jewelry made from your own breast milk.

Make Breast Milk Lotion

Ingredients

• 100 ml grapeseed oil

• 1 tbsp beeswax

• Few drops of Vitamin E oil

• 100 ml fresh Breastmilk, at room temperature

• Couple drops of essential oil for scent

Steps:

1. Using the low setting on the microwave, heat the oil and beeswax together until the beeswax is barely melted. 

2. Add Vitamin E oil.

3. Slowly pour in the Breast milk and whisk the mixture. It should thicken.

4. Allow to cool and thicken before using it.


How to make breast milk soap

Ingredients
500g soap base
250ml room temperature breast milk
6-8 drops of essential oil (you can use what you like, but lavender is lovely for sleepy-time baths)
A pinch of herbs or dried flowers (optional)


Method
STEP 1: Melt the soap base

STEP 2:: Mix in the room temperature breast milk – you can add less if you like

STEP 3: Stir until well mixed and add any essential oils or herbs you might like in your soap

STEP 4: Pour the liquid into any shape container or mould that you wish to make your soap.

STEP 5: Put the containers into your fridge and you should have beautiful breast milk soap after a couple of hours
